Whitmore, California is a picturesque rural community with a population of approximately 800, where people come to relax and enjoy the beautiful outdoors. Whitmore is located 25 miles east of Redding, California nestled under a canopy dominated by pine, fir and cedar trees that cover the western slopes of the Cascade Mountain Range between Mt. Shasta and Mt. Lassen. As you drive into Whitmore you enter a Ponderosa Pine forest at an elevation of about 2,200 ft. There are only a few buildings, other than homes, in our little community. These include two churches, the Whitmore Volunteer Fire Company, the Post Office, the Whitmore General Store, Whitmore School, the Community Library, The Community Center and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Prevention, station 35.
Whitmore is a small community in a location that has many advantages people tend not to recognize. For example, given that summertime temperatures in the Sacramento Valley often exceed 100 degrees, Whitmore tends to stay below 100 degrees and in the evenings cools down faster that most urban areas. Another advantage of Whitmore is its natural beauty. It is pleasant to hear the sounds of rushing water, the breeze blowing through swaying branches, and the sounds of bird songs from above and wild turkey, wild peacocks and peahens from ground level. You can’t hear those sounds in the city, now can you? Deer are a common sight in Whitmore. However, there is a wide variety of wildlife that usually stays just out of eyesight. Anyone who loves the outdoors and mother nature’s beautiful creatures should come to our little town, visit and have a stress free day.
